John Hudson Thomas, a renown Berkeley Architect, designed this residence’s main house in the 1920s. Thomas was a master of combining materials for building exteriors. When a freestanding, two-story studio was requested to the east of the main house, careful attention was paid to respecting the existing building’s exterior treatment. The large vaulted ceiling clear spans the width of the studio with heavy timber trusses and wood decking. A large glass door opens the studio onto a balcony, overlooking the cascading amphitheater downhill to the studio. A circular stair tower with glass exterior provide access to the backyard amphitheater.
